How to Use the Family Advent Collection
Because of the variety included in the Family Advent Collection, families can easily tailor the advent activities to fit their schedules. Choosing from daily or weekly activities, families can weave the advent activities and traditions into their busy family lives in a way that works best for them. To make it easier for families to add these activities to their family routines we have created a schedule that can be used. Use the schedule as a guide only though and be sure to change and tailor it to be fit your family's needs. Best for kids ages 4 - 12.
First Sunday of Advent: Hope - Create a family advent wreath and talk about its history. Read and discuss a family devotional and solve the first Seek-and-Find Advent puzzle. Discuss how the remaining advent activities will be added throughout the rest of the week.
During the Week - At breakfast have the children open the windows of the Advent calendar and try to solve the riddles. During dinner pass around the Seek-and-Find Advent Book and try to solve the puzzles as you eat. Giving each family member a chance to try and solve the puzzle and keeping silent until all have had a chance. At bedtime, gather to read and discuss the family devotion for the day and light the Advent wreath.
Second Sunday of Advent: Peace - Light the Advent wreath and play a game of Chritskindl's. Get all of the family involved and develop a plan to help younger members of the family. Play the game throughout the week.
During the Week - Continue with the Advent calendar, the Seek-and-Find Advent puzzle, family devotions and lighting of the Advent wreath.
Third Sunday of Advent: Joy - Light the Advent wreath and make a family Giving Box (included). Discuss as a family how to collect money for the box and how it should be used.
During the Week - Continue with the Advent calendar, the Seek-and-Find Advent puzzle, family devotions and lighting of the Advent wreath.
Fourth Sunday of Advent: Love - Light the Advent wreath and make daily reminders using coins with the verse John 3:16 inscribed.
The History
These Advent family nights began in our home in response to our desire our daughters understood Christmas was more than just Santa and presents. We also wanted to create a simple, quiet Christmas tradition we could do in the comfort of our own home (we had grown increasingly tired of having to bundle them up to go out). Unfortunately with the demands of our jobs, the girls' school activities, and just the general craziness of life we were finding it hard to do this without spending a lot of time, energy, and money. Because of these frustrations, we were determined to find a simpler better way and thus began our idea for family Advent nights. We began using these activities in our own home and have also shared them with other families in our church. We combine the Advent activities with Christmas stories, Christmas songs, family Christmas rituals, and of course snacks. Our girls absolutely love this time we share together and look forward to it every week.
