For those of the
Christian faith, Easter is the celebration of the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ, but for many is also a celebration
of spring, birth, and the Easter Bunny. Easter is preceded by
the Lenten season, the six week period prior to Easter Sunday.
Lent, derived from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning spring, begins
on Ash Wednesday and continues for forty six days (forty days
with Sunday’s excluded). For many, it is a period marked by
sacrifice and self-discipline.
The tradition of the Easter Bunny originated in Germany in the
1500’s and became part of the American traditions in the 1700’s.
Brought to America by German settlers, children were taught
that if they were good “Oschter Haws” would leave colored eggs
in nests made by children in their homes or barns. Children
would often use their hats or bonnets to make their nests thus
leading to the Easter basket tradition.
Easter Sunday is always the first Sunday after the
Paschal Full Moon
and can occur anywhere between March 21st through April 25th.
This year, Ash Wednesday begins on March 1, 2006 and Easter is
on April 16, 2006. |
