Materials |
|
Hard boiled egg
without shell (large/ Xlarge eggs are best)
Glass bottle
with an opening slightly smaller than the egg
Matches
Small piece of paper |
|
|
|
|
Directions |
|
Put the small
piece of paper into the bottle
Light a match and drop into the bottle along with the paper
Immediately place the egg on top of the bottle, so that the
opening is completely closed.
Watch the egg drop into the bottle!
To get the egg out of the bottle, hold the bottle upside down so
that the egg blocks the bottle opening. Blow as hard as you can
into the bottle. The air pressure in the bottle forces the egg
out and into your hand. |

What's Going On? |
|
The egg
prevents outside
air
(high pressure) from getting into the bottle while the flame
causes the air inside the bottle (low pressure) to contract
causing a small vacuum.
As the outer air pushes its way into the bottle and the vacuum
is created in the bottle, the egg falls in. |
