About Elf on the Shelf

The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition™ is an activity the entire family will enjoy. Based on the tradition Carol Aebersold began with her family in the 1970s, this cleverly rhymed children's book explains that Santa knows who is naughty and/or nice because he sends a scout elf to every home. During the holiday season, the elf watches children by day and reports to Santa each night. When children awake, the elf has returned from the North Pole and can be found hiding in a different location. This activity allows The Elf on the Shelf to become a delightful hide-and-seek game. I started Elf on the Shelf with my daughter two years ago (she was 4 going on 5--her birthday is 12/25!). She named her elf Foster and loves him to pieces. He always comes the day after Thanksgiving and stays with us until Christmas Eve and he leaves her a note--just like Santa does--every Christmas morning.

My husband and I separated in 09/2008 then reconciled in 01/2010, had another child 11/2010, and my husband left our family again in 05/2011. I've also been dealing with some health issues this year, so it's been particularly difficult for my daughter and myself. In addition to all of that, we moved the same month my husband and I separated, so the adjustment's been rough. She's been talking about Foster for weeks now and I couldn't wait to get him out of storage with our other Christmas things. Well, I looked for him Thanksgiving night--no Foster. I called her dad (he still resides at our old home)--no Foster. I know I packed him, but somehow he didn't make the move. I knew I could not break the news to her that Foster was gone, so I had to replace him, and FAST. I found your site and ordered a new "Foster" the same day. [My daughter] was starting to think she hadn't been a good girl and that's why Foster hadn't shown up yet. I hid Foster in a place I knew she'd see him and when she got home from school it took her 2.5 secs to find him! She started screaming "Foster, Foster, I knew you'd find our new house! He must have been stuck in snow just like you said, Mommy!" To see my child's face light up was the most amazing thing I've had happen to me in some time now. I lovingly refer to our new friend (only to myself, of course) as "Foster the Imposter". :o) We're also enjoying the Advent calendar very much and she looks forward to learning something new everyday.
