Family calendars come in a variety of great designs and styles making it sometimes a challenge to find the right one to fit your needs. Use these tips to help you make the right choice.
Magnetic or Non-Magnetic - Choose a magnetic refrigerator calendar if your refrigerator is a central point of communication in your family or if you do most of your family planning and scheduling from the kitchen. Choose a non-magnetic family wall calendar if you have a stainless steel refrigerator or like to hang your family calendar on a wall, bulletin board, or in an office or mud room. Please note, that most magnetic family calendars also have the ability to hang on a bulletin board or on the back of a door.
Month at a Glance - Choose a month at a glance calendar format if you tend to do a lot of forward planning and enjoy the ability to see your family's schedule for the entire month.
Week at a Glance - Week at a glance calendars are a good fit for detail oriented planners, families struggling with ADHD, or families with very busy schedules because they give you the ability to see the details of your days and weeks without overwhelming you with the entire month. Choose a week at a glance calendar or a weekly monthly calendar if you have very busy schedules that change significantly from week to week or if you find monthly calendars overwhelming.
Weekly Monthly Calendars - Simplifying your systems at home is one of the EASIEST ways to be better organized and less scattered and our weekly monthly family calendars are the perfect tool to help you do just that! By combining two calendars into one, a weekly monthly calendar will let you keep track of family schedules and chores/homework all on one page. These calendars are a good fit for families with very busy schedules, families looking for a system to keep track of chores or homework, or for families struggling with ADHD.
Separate Planning Spaces - Family calendars with separate planning spaces for each family member give parents an extra level of detail and organization. Choose a family calendar with individual planning spaces if you have more than one child or very busy schedules.
Dry Erase - Dry erase calendars give families a lot of flexibility and don't require the purchase of a new calendar every year. Choose a dry erase calendar if you have the space to hang one (most are wall mount), have time to update it every month with new dates, and are willing to sacrifice the ability to see multiple months at one time.
Dated or Undated - Family calendars come in either a dated or undated format. Choose a dated format if you use your family calendar regularly and have a lot of things going on in your family's schedule. Choose an undated family calendar if you don't necessarily need a calendar every week or month, but need one available for especially busy times.
Vertical or Horizontal Grid - Family calendars with separate planning spaces come in two different formats, a horizontal format with the dates running across the top and family names down the side and a vertical format with family names running across the top and the dates running down the side. With the vertical format, you only need to write the family members' names once and you can more easily get a good read of each person's schedule. But you do sacrifice the "traditional" monthly or weekly calendar view; making it more difficult to quickly spot when certain days or weekends occur in the month or week. With the horizontal format, you maintain the "traditional" monthly or weekly calendar view, but getting a quick read on each family members' schedule can be more difficult. Family calendars with a vertical format are the BusyBodyBook Wall Calendar and the Fridge GRID Pad . Family calendars with the horizontal format are Mom's Plan It Calendar, Do It All Mom Calendar, Family Plan It Calendar, Weekly Family Planner, Mom's Plan It Christian Calendar, Mom's Home Plan It Christian Calendar, Mom's Home Plan It, and Family Life Do It All
Storage Pockets - Because families usually have a lot of stuff and a lot going on, many family calendars have incorporated storage pockets into their design. Choose a calendar with pockets if you need a handy way of keeping track of birthday invitations, permission slips, appointment card reminders, or other stray papers that find their way into your home.
Size of the Family - Keeping track of the family schedule is a big job, but can be really tough for large families. Choose a large family calendar and planner if your family has six or more members.
Up Close and Personal - Family calendars are great tools for keeping you organized AND a great tool for improving family communication, so be sure to keep your calendar in a central location where EVERYONE can see and use it. When you hang a family calendar in an out of a way place (i.e. a home office or mud room), it makes updating and referencing more difficult and dramatically increases the chances that you won’t use it. The family kitchen is usually the best place for hanging the family calendar because this tends to be the place where the family crosses paths most frequently, but every family will be different, so choose a spot that works best for your family. Just be sure it is a spot that is accessible and visible.
Share Ownership – Avoid assigning one family member the job of “family scheduler” by teaching all family members (once they are old enough) how to read, use, and update the calendar. This is a great way of relieving the burden on mom or dad and is a great way of empowering your kids and teaching them time management and organization skills. Before handing over the pen though, be sure to set some ground rules for updating the calendar as well as a system for discussing and resolving conflicts.
Understand Your Needs – Family calendars have come a long way in terms of the features they offer, so it is important to choose a family calendar that meets your family’s needs. How much detail do you need from your family calendar? Are you a micro or macro planner? Do you need the nitty-gritty details of each day or just a quick glance at your family’s overall schedule? Do you want a way to leave each other notes, jot down grocery lists, or phone messages? How busy are your schedules? Do you need a place to store appointment reminder cards, birthday invitations, or school notes? See our how to choose section to help you navigate through all the different features of a family calendar.
Add It to Your Daily Routines - A family calendar is no help if not used or regularly updated, so establish a routine for updating the calendar on a regular basis. Pick a day of the week (Sunday's are usually good for this) to take all of the notes, permission slips, appointment cards, and emails you accumulate throughout the week and transfer the dates and information to your calendar. And be sure to use family meetings to review schedules and ensure you have everything you need on your calendar.
Though individual styles and designs differ from calendar to calendar, most family calendars offer most of these essential features:
Extended Calendar - Most family calendars come with an extended calendar running anywhere between 16 and 17 months long.
Academic Calendar - Beginning in either August or September, most family calendars coincide with the academic school year calendar.
Multiple Schedules - Using generous sizing or separate planning spaces, family calendars allow parents to keep track of their own personal schedule as well as schedules for their children.
Note and List Making Features - Because parents make a lot of notes and lists, family calendars provide space for small notes and lists.
Contact Information - Family calendars help keep important contact information handy with easy to read and updated address information of babysitters, friends, kids' classmates, and business contacts.
Storage - Some family calendars have handy storage pockets for papers, birthday invites, directions, and appointment card reminders.
