How the Chore System Works

  1. Your child wakes up in the morning.  He makes his bed, turns off his light and eats breakfast.  After breakfast, he clears up his mess, rinses his dishes and brushes his teeth - all without reminders from you.  How does he know to do this?  He looks on his MORNING hook.  Everything (except eat breakfast) is there for him to see.  As he completes each task, he removes its corresponding yellow card off the MORNING hook and places it in the "I DID IT!"  box.  You kiss him good-bye at the door and off he goes to catch the school bus.  Meanwhile, you walk over to his Chore Board.  Any cards left on the MORNING hook are now moved to the EXTRA hook by you.  In other words, he has to make his bed in the morning or not at all.  If he did make his bed, but forgot to move the card into the "I DID IT!" box that's too bad for him.  You've got your own agenda for the day and it only includes moving cards to the EXTRA hook.  That is all the maintenance you are required to do.
  2. The next time you see him is after school.  He comes in the door, hangs up his coat, does his homework, puts his backpack away, and practices the piano.  Why?  Because there is of course something in it for him.  At the end of the day, just before bedtime, he hands in all the cards in his "I DID IT!" box.  In turn he receives a green token for every card handed in (or a red token for every 5 cards completed).  He does not receive tokens for cards put on the EXTRA hook.
  3. The tokens are the crux of the whole system.  They are to be redeemable for previously established rewards.  They can be non-monetary rewards such as staying up past bedtime or a backrub from Mom and Dad.  They can also be rewards of minimum monetary value, but prioritized by the child just the same.  For example, buying an item from the ice cream truck or renting a video of this choosing.
