How to Choose a Chore Chart
Choosing the right chore chart for your kids can be difficult. Chore charts come in many different styles and designs and what works for a preschooler will not work for a teenager. Use these tips and suggestions to help you make the right choice.
- Ages of Your Children - Different aged children have different needs for learning and following through on chores. If your children are between the ages of three and six, choose either the Dry Erase Chore Chart, Magnetic Responsibility Chart, or I Did My Chores!. For kids between the ages of 6 and twelve, choose either the Dry Erase Chore Chart, momAgenda Chore Chart, or Chore.pad. For teenagers, choose either the Chore.pad, momAgenda Chore Chart, or a brightly colored dry erase board.
- Ability to Customize - Some chore charts come with the chores already included whereas other chore charts are blank and allow parents the flexibility to come up with and assign their own chores. Choose either the momAgenda Chore Chart or Dry Erase Chore Chart if you like the ability to create your own chores. Or, choose either the Magnetic Responsibility Chart, I Did My Chores!, or Chore.pad if you are looking for a chore chart that is easy to update and comes with pre-designated chores.
- Speed - Though offering a lot of flexibility, blank chore charts also tend to take more time to update, change and track. If you are looking for a chore chart that is quick to update, choose either the Chore.pad, Magnetic Responsibility Chart, or I Did My Chores!.
How to Use a Chore Chart
Families who are successful at getting their kids to do and follow through on chores, often use a chore chart to help them. Here are a few tips to help you make your chore chart a success in your home.
- Sit down and decide as a family who has ownership for each chore. Be sure to give your kids a say in which chores they do.
- Consider rotating chores from time to time to give your kids new learning opportunities and to minimize boredom.
- Keep your chore chart in a visible central place for easy reference and updates.
- Be sure to use an age appropriate chore chart. As your child grows, they will have different motivations, needs, and desires, so be sure to use a chore chart that inspires them.
- Be sure to check and update progress often and on a regular basis.
- Use rewards and consequences for encouraging and motivating your kids to do their chores.
- Remember, chore charts are ONLY a tool and cannot be substituted for parental oversight or involvement.
