How to Use the My Growing Up Chart

My Growing Up ChartAt a suitable moment sit down and open this chart with your child, get them excited by telling them that it is going to be their special chart to show how well they are doing.  Together, decide on a good place to hang the chart; put it in an area where both you and your child can easily see it.

Write your child's name with the dry-erase marker provided.  Encourage your child to do this if they are starting to write.

Decide which activity stickers are relevant to your child's development at this particular time and what areas you want to concentrate on.  Encourage your child to stick these stickers on the left hand side in the spaces provided.  A brief explanation of what is expected from the use of each sticker will help your child to understand.

It is fine to be creative with the use of each sticker, for example "I've practiced my reading" can cover the first stage of encouraging your child to read simple word books, or alternatively sitting nicely when reading together.

Use the blank stickers to focus on particular issues not covered in the category stickers.  Write a description of the activity with the pen provided.  These can be general things like "Putting my shoes on" or more complex behavioral issues.

Try and focus on the positives when labeling the blank stickers, for example if your child has a tendency to raise his voice then label it as "Great job for speaking nicely today" rather than "Don't shout".

Use the colored numbers each time your child does well, however small their action may be (start with 1 working your way through 20).  Encourage them to count their rewards along the way and to practice learning their colors.

If your child does exceptionally well give them a gold "Great Job" star sticker.  Exceptionally well can include doing something without being asked or being reminded.

Try setting goals to give your child something to look forward to.
