Rubber Egg in Vinegar Experiment

Materials

Hard boiled eggs with shell
White vinegar
Drinking glass or plastic cup

Directions

Place an egg  with the shell still on in a cup or glass of white vinegar.  Let the egg sit for 2-3 days. At the end of the 3 days, remove the eggs from the vinegar and gently rinse the shell off of the egg.

Let the kids play with them by gently poking and squeezing them to see how they feel. Or better yet, let them have a contest to see who’s egg will bounce and who’s egg will bounce the farthest (this is best done outdoors….)

What's Going On?

The egg’s shell is made up of calcium carbonate and is “eaten” up by the acidic vinegar. Leaving behind only the inner membrane and giving them a rubbery feel.
