The beauty of Seasons of Joy is that it's far more useful than a traditional keepsake book that you fill out in one sitting and shelve for the rest of eternity. It's a way to record your family's traditions and inspire new festivities that will become part of a long line of cherished family memories. Fill in the sections of the book that will be helpful to you throughout the year now such as the Family Friends contact section to make card sending easier; or add your family's favorite seasonal recipes so you don't forget how to make them. Divided by season, the book is easy to refer to and update as your family celebrates throughout the year.
The keepsake book is divided into five sections: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Family Friends. Each season's section has a Special Occasions chart for each month of that season. If your family always takes a short road trip to a town for its Christmas light displays on December 10, you'll want to mark the day. The Special Occasions pages are also the ideal place to keep track of family birthdays so you won't forget to send a card. At the bottom of each month's chart is a Things to Remember This Month notes section. Think of all the tasks you do in preparation for holidays and gatherings- spring cleaning, cooking baking, purchasing gifts, and organizing decorations for storage-and write them in this section. The recipient of the book will not only have fond memories of the things you did to get ready for each season, they'll also have an outline for how to prepare for the holidays.
The ultimate purpose of this keepsake is to ensure that annual traditions are remembered and upheld by the family for years to come. The first step toward preservation is keeping a record, so we've provided pages in each season's section to fill in Our Family's Traditions and even pages for New Traditions. For current traditions, we suggest two ways of detailing what your family observes; either ask a parent, grandparent, or other elder relation to provide you with their version of the tradition to serve as the record, or simply jot it down from your best recollection. Perhaps your family has created some new traditions of its own that you would like your children to carry on in their families. Add those to the New Traditions pages and note when they started. Imagine how enjoyable it will be to read about those same traditions years from now.
A large part of any family's traditions are the meals enjoyed on specific holidays and occasions. If your father has whipped up the family's signature glogg concoction for your annual Christmas gathering for as long as you can remember, then you want to be certain you know how to replicate his savory brew. The Favorite Recipes pages are the perfect place to put grandma's deviled egg recipe, your kids' favorite wintertime comfort foods, and any dish that makes each season extra special for your family.
Use the photo-safe scrapbooking pages in each season's section for whatever you like. Make a collage out of your favorite photos from a particular season and leave a page for the next generation, or use the pages to affix mementos, such as a menu from the restaurant where you eat Easter dinner every year or a flyer from your neighborhood's autumn craft fair.
The Family Friends section is the place you want to keep contact information for all the longtime friends your family has enjoyed throughout the years. Consider long-distance relatives, the group of people that most often appears at family events, or whomever you wouldn't want to forget (and wouldn't want your children to forget) when sending holiday cards.
A note about storage: Seasons of Joy has dividers with pockets as well as a convenient 3-pocket expandable file built into the back of the book to store photos, family recipes, and mementos. We suggest that as you gather special items-whether a recipe on an index card or a ticket stub from a holiday concert-you place them in this pocket for safe-keeping until you have the time to enter them into the book.
