Ingredients
Scale
Primary Ingredients:
- 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- 1 (16 ounces / 453 grams) bag mini marshmallows
- ½ cup dulce de leche
Butter and Flavoring:
- 1 cup (2 sticks / 227 grams) unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Finishing Ingredients:
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- Optional: flaky sea salt for topping
- Additional dulce de leche for drizzling
Instructions
- Prepare a 9×13 inch baking dish by lining it with parchment paper. Gently coat the parchment with cooking spray to ensure easy removal of your treats later.
- Melt 1 cup (227 grams) of unsalted butter in a large pot over medium heat. Watch carefully as the butter transforms, bubbling and turning a rich golden-brown color in 5-7 minutes. The nutty aroma will signal it’s perfectly browned.
- Reduce heat to low. Stir 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and ¼ teaspoon salt into the brown butter. Add 14 ounces (397 grams) of mini marshmallows, reserving 2 cups. Stir until marshmallows completely dissolve into a smooth mixture.
- Incorporate ½ cup dulce de leche into the marshmallow mixture. Stir until the caramel blends seamlessly, creating a rich, golden base.
- Remove the pot from heat. Gently fold 6 cups (170 grams) of Rice Krispies cereal into the mixture. Sprinkle in the reserved 2 cups of marshmallows for extra texture.
- Transfer the mixture to your prepared pan. Press gently with a spatula to create an even layer. Drizzle additional dulce de leche across the top.
- Optional: Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the surface for a sophisticated sweet-salty finish. Allow treats to set at room temperature for 1 hour before cutting into squares.
Notes
- Brown the butter slowly and watch carefully to achieve a deep golden color without burning, which adds a rich, nutty flavor to the treats.
- Use a rubber spatula coated with cooking spray when pressing the mixture into the pan to prevent sticking and create a smooth, even surface.
- For a gluten-free version, swap regular Rice Krispies with a gluten-free crispy rice cereal to make the recipe accessible to more people.
- Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days, separating layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
