Description

Chopped steak became my go-to comfort meal when craving something hearty and satisfying. Packed with savory beef and simple ingredients, this classic dish delivers robust flavor that brings warmth to your dinner table.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic

Binding/Mixing Ingredients:

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper

Cooking/Gravy Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, ½ cup breadcrumbs, 1 large egg, 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Gently mix ingredients until just incorporated.
  2. Form the meat mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties, each about ½ inch thick. Create a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent bulging during cooking.
  3. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat at 375°F. Carefully place the patties into the hot skillet.
  4. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on the first side until a golden-brown crust forms. Flip the patties and cook an additional 3-4 minutes.
  5. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. Keep them warm while preparing the gravy.
  6. Sprinkle 1 tbsp flour into the same skillet, stirring quickly to prevent burning. Pour 1 cup beef broth into the skillet, whisking constantly to create a smooth sauce.
  7. Add 1 tbsp butter to the gravy, stirring until it melts and the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, coating them completely with the hot gravy. Serve immediately while hot and fresh.

Notes

  • Let the ground beef rest at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before forming patties to ensure even cooking and better texture.
  • Season the meat generously with salt and pepper, mixing gently to keep the patties tender without overworking the meat.
  • Create a small indent in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up during cooking and help them cook more evenly.
  • For a gluten-free version, replace wheat flour with cornstarch or a gluten-free flour blend when making the gravy.
