Ingredients
Scale
Main Proteins:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 egg
Supporting Starches and Binders:
- ¼ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tbsp flour
Flavor Enhancers and Aromatics:
- ¼ cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cups mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Combine 1 lb ground beef, ¼ cup breadcrumbs, ¼ cup finely chopped onion, 1 egg, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Blend thoroughly with your hands until ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Gently shape the meat mixture into 4 oval patties, each about ½ inch thick. Press the centers slightly to prevent bulging during cooking.
- Melt 2 tbsp butter in a large skillet over medium heat (350°F). Carefully place patties in the hot skillet.
- Cook patties for 4-5 minutes on the first side until a golden-brown crust forms. Flip and cook an additional 4-5 minutes on the second side.
- Transfer cooked patties to a plate, keeping them warm. Leave the brown bits in the skillet for extra flavor.
- Add 2 cups sliced mushrooms to the same skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until they release their moisture and turn golden.
- Sprinkle 1 tbsp flour over the mushrooms. Stir constantly for 60 seconds to cook the flour and prevent clumping.
- Pour 2 cups beef broth into the skillet. Whisk continuously until the sauce thickens and becomes smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
- Return patties to the skillet, nestling them into the mushroom gravy. Simmer for 10 minutes at low heat to blend flavors and ensure patties are heated through.
- Plate the Salisbury steak, spooning extra mushroom gravy over the top. Serve immediately while hot.
Notes
- Choose ground beef with 80/20 fat content for juiciest patties that hold together well during cooking.
- Add a splash of extra Worcestershire sauce to the gravy for deeper, more complex flavor profile.
- Avoid pressing down on patties while cooking to prevent losing moisture and creating tough meat.
- Let patties rest 3-4 minutes after cooking so juices redistribute, keeping the meat tender and flavorful.
