Description

Philly Cheesesteak brings classic street-corner comfort straight to your kitchen with juicy beef, melted cheese, and a crusty roll that satisfies serious sandwich cravings. Slicing steak thin and grilling with peppers creates that authentic Philadelphia flavor your taste buds will absolutely adore.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein:

  • 2 pounds Top sirloin steak or Ribeye, trimmed and sliced very thin

Produce:

  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • ½ teaspoon minced garlic
  • 4 oz sliced mushrooms

Dairy and Bread:

  • 8 slices mild provolone cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 hoagie rolls, sliced through

Seasonings:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons coarse Kosher salt, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Trim 2 pounds of top sirloin or ribeye into whisper-thin slices, ensuring each piece is nearly translucent for tender bites.
  2. Chop 1 yellow onion, 1 green bell pepper, and 1 red bell pepper into uniform bite-sized pieces that will cook evenly.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a large cast-iron skillet over high heat (425°F) until the oil shimmers and just starts to smoke.
  4. Quickly sear steak slices for 90 seconds, stirring constantly, until edges turn golden brown and meat develops a beautiful caramelized exterior.
  5. Remove steak from skillet, transfer to a plate, and keep warm while maintaining skillet temperature.
  6. Add 4 ounces sliced mushrooms to the same skillet, cooking for 3-4 minutes until they release their moisture and start to brown.
  7. Introduce chopped onions and peppers to the skillet, sautéing for 5-6 minutes at medium-high heat (375°F) until vegetables become soft and slightly charred.
  8. Sprinkle ½ teaspoon minced garlic over vegetables, stirring to prevent burning and release aromatic flavors.
  9. Return steak to skillet, combining with vegetables and seasoning with 2 teaspoons kosher salt and ½ teaspoon black pepper.
  10. Split 4 hoagie rolls, spreading 1 tablespoon softened butter on each interior surface.
  11. Spread 1 tablespoon mayonnaise across buttered roll surfaces for extra richness.
  12. Layer steak and vegetable mixture generously onto each roll.
  13. Top each sandwich with 2 slices of mild provolone cheese.
  14. Place sandwiches under broiler at 500°F for 2-3 minutes, watching carefully until cheese melts and edges become golden.

Notes

  • Slice the beef against the grain for maximum tenderness and easier chewing.
  • Use a very hot cast iron skillet to get a perfect sear on the steak, creating delicious caramelized edges.
  • Choose a high-quality provolone or white American cheese for authentic Philly flavor that melts smoothly.
  • If avoiding gluten, swap hoagie rolls for lettuce wraps or gluten-free rolls to make the sandwich diet-friendly.
