Description

Cabbage and Sausage Skillet delivers pure comfort straight from my kitchen to your plate. Hearty sausage chunks nestled with tender cabbage create a simple, satisfying meal that comes together in one pan with minimal fuss.

Ingredients

Scale

Primary Ingredients:

  • 1 head green cabbage
  • 1 pound smoked sausage
  • 2 medium carrots
  • 1 medium onion

Supporting Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic

Seasoning Ingredients:

  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes
  • Optional: Fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Gather and prep all ingredients: chop 1 medium green cabbage (approximately 6 cups), dice 1 medium onion, slice 1 pound smoked sausage into thin rounds, and slice 2 medium carrots.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat (375°F). Cook sausage rounds until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes on each side. Transfer sausage to a separate plate.
  3. In the same skillet with remaining oil, sauté 1 medium diced onion and 2 sliced carrots for 3-4 minutes until they start to soften. Add 2 minced garlic cloves and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
  4. Add chopped cabbage to the skillet, sprinkling ½ teaspoon paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir thoroughly to distribute seasonings evenly.
  5. Reduce heat to medium (350°F) and cook cabbage mixture for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Your cabbage should become tender but still maintain a slight crispness.
  6. Return sausage rounds to the skillet, gently mixing with vegetables. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to reheat sausage and blend flavors.
  7. Optional: Sprinkle red pepper flakes for extra heat. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving hot directly from the skillet.

Notes

  • Swap pork sausage for chicken or turkey sausage to reduce fat and calories for a leaner meal.
  • Chop vegetables uniformly so they cook evenly and look beautiful on the plate.
  • Fresh cabbage provides the best texture, so select a crisp head without brown spots or wilting edges.
  • Choose smoked sausage for deeper flavor, or use kielbasa for a traditional Polish-style twist.
