Ingredients
Scale
Primary Ingredients:
- 1 head green cabbage
- 1 pound smoked sausage
- 2 medium carrots
- 1 medium onion
Supporting Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic
Seasoning Ingredients:
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Optional: Red pepper flakes
- Optional: Fresh parsley
Instructions
- Gather and prep all ingredients: chop 1 medium green cabbage (approximately 6 cups), dice 1 medium onion, slice 1 pound smoked sausage into thin rounds, and slice 2 medium carrots.
- Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat (375°F). Cook sausage rounds until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes on each side. Transfer sausage to a separate plate.
- In the same skillet with remaining oil, sauté 1 medium diced onion and 2 sliced carrots for 3-4 minutes until they start to soften. Add 2 minced garlic cloves and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
- Add chopped cabbage to the skillet, sprinkling ½ teaspoon paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir thoroughly to distribute seasonings evenly.
- Reduce heat to medium (350°F) and cook cabbage mixture for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Your cabbage should become tender but still maintain a slight crispness.
- Return sausage rounds to the skillet, gently mixing with vegetables. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to reheat sausage and blend flavors.
- Optional: Sprinkle red pepper flakes for extra heat. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving hot directly from the skillet.
Notes
- Swap pork sausage for chicken or turkey sausage to reduce fat and calories for a leaner meal.
- Chop vegetables uniformly so they cook evenly and look beautiful on the plate.
- Fresh cabbage provides the best texture, so select a crisp head without brown spots or wilting edges.
- Choose smoked sausage for deeper flavor, or use kielbasa for a traditional Polish-style twist.
