Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients:
- 2 cups bread flour
- 1 cup low-fat plain cottage cheese
Leavening and Seasoning:
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Liquid Ingredients:
- ¼ cup water or milk
- Additional water for brushing
Optional Toppings:
- 1 green chili
- 3–4 sprigs fresh cilantro
- 1–2 cloves garlic
- Butter or ghee for brushing
Instructions
- Combine 2 cups bread flour, 1 cup cottage cheese, 1½ teaspoons baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Mix ingredients until they form small, loose lumps.
- Pour ¼ cup water into the flour mixture. Knead gently, gradually incorporating all liquid until the dough becomes smooth and soft.
- Transform the dough into a cylindrical log. Divide the log into 6 equal portions using a sharp knife.
- Shape each portion into a compact ball. Roll each ball into an oval approximately ¼ inch thick using gentle, even pressure.
- Lightly dampen one side of each naan with water, creating a slightly sticky surface for better cooking and steaming.
- Heat a cast iron skillet over medium heat for 8-10 minutes until surface is evenly warm.
- Place the naan water-side down in the hot skillet. Sprinkle minced garlic, green chili, and cilantro across the top surface.
- Cook for 60-90 seconds until small bubbles develop across the naan’s surface.
- Carefully flip the naan using tongs. If using a gas stove, quickly invert the skillet over the flame for 15-20 seconds.
- Continue cooking for another 30-45 seconds until both sides display golden-brown spots.
- Remove from skillet and brush with melted butter or ghee if desired. Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- Cottage cheese adds protein and softness to the dough, making the naan more nutritious and tender.
- Use room temperature cottage cheese for smoother mixing and easier dough formation.
- Cast iron skillet works best for authentic naan texture, creating crispy exterior and soft interior.
- For gluten-free option, substitute regular flour with gluten-free blend and add xanthan gum to help binding.
