Protein and Main Ingredients:
- 1 ground beef (half kg)
- 1 cup long grain rice
- 1 cup frozen peas
Dairy and Sauce Ingredients:
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded cheese
- 1 cup chicken broth
Supporting Ingredients:
- 2 onions (chopped finely)
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- Salt (to taste)
- Pepper (to taste)
- Oregano (to taste)
Instructions
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over high heat. Sauté 2 finely chopped onions for exactly 2 minutes until they become translucent.
- Add 1 pound ground beef and 1 tablespoon garlic powder to the skillet. Thoroughly combine ingredients and cook on medium heat until beef completely changes color.
- Sprinkle 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon pepper, and 1 teaspoon oregano over the beef. Stir to distribute seasonings evenly.
- Pour 1 can of tomato sauce, 1 cup chicken broth, 1 cup boiled long-grain rice, and 1 cup frozen peas into the beef mixture. Simmer on low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Transfer the entire mixture to a casserole dish. Spread it evenly across the bottom of the dish.
- Bake the casserole at 250 degrees F for 15-20 minutes, ensuring the mixture is heated through completely.
- Remove the casserole from the oven and mix 1 cup sour cream with 1 cup shredded cheese in a separate bowl.
- Pour the cheese and sour cream mixture over the top of the casserole. Return to the oven and bake for another 15 minutes until the cheese bubbles and turns golden.
- Remove from the oven and let stand for 5 minutes before serving your hearty, comforting meal.
Notes
- Swap ground beef for ground turkey or plant-based crumbles to make a lighter or vegetarian version of this hearty casserole.
- For extra flavor, consider adding diced bell peppers or mushrooms when sautéing the onions to boost nutrition and complexity.
- Use freshly grated cheese instead of pre-shredded for a smoother, more melted topping that blends better with the sour cream.
- If your family prefers spicier dishes, sprinkle some red pepper flakes or add a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture before baking.
