Description

Delicate flour tortillas from scratch bring warm, authentic Mexican kitchen magic right to your dinner table. Tender, fresh tortillas roll out quickly with just a few simple ingredients and some loving kitchen time.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil

Liquid Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup warm water

Seasoning:

  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Whisk 2 cups of all-purpose flour and ½ teaspoon salt together in a large mixing bowl, creating a clean base for your homemade tortillas.
  2. Pour 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil and ¾ cup of warm water into the flour mixture. Stir until a rough dough emerges, adding extra water by tablespoon if the mixture seems dry.
  3. Transfer your dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 4-5 minutes until the texture becomes smooth and elastic, developing the dough’s strength.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp towel and let it rest for 20 minutes at room temperature, allowing the gluten to relax and making rolling easier.
  5. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a round ball, keeping unused balls covered to prevent drying.
  6. On a floured surface, roll each ball into a 6-8 inch circular shape, aiming for thin, even thickness. Don’t worry about perfect edges.
  7. Heat a dry skillet to 375°F over medium-high heat. Place one tortilla in the pan and cook for 30-45 seconds until golden brown spots appear.
  8. Flip the tortilla and cook the opposite side for an additional 30 seconds. Watch for slight puffing, indicating proper cooking.
  9. Transfer each cooked tortilla to a plate, covering with a clean towel to retain warmth and softness.

Notes

  • Rest the dough at least 20 minutes to help gluten relax and make rolling easier.
  • Use a very hot, dry skillet to get those perfect golden brown spots on your tortillas.
  • Keep tortillas covered with a towel while cooking and after to maintain softness and warmth.
  • Roll tortillas thin for a more authentic texture, and don’t worry about making perfect circles.
