Ingredients

Scale

Proteins:

  • 1 pound flank steak

Sauce and Seasonings:

  • ½ cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper

Base and Dairy:

  • 1 cup white rice
  • 1 ¾ cups beef broth
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • Fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Mix 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Coat your 1-pound flank steak thoroughly in the marinade and refrigerate for 15-60 minutes.
  2. Whisk ½ cup barbecue sauce, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon chili powder in a separate bowl. Set sauce aside.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet at medium-high heat. Sear marinated steak for 2-3 minutes per side until browned. Cook to desired doneness, approximately 5-6 minutes total for medium-rare. Remove steak and tent with foil.
  4. Reduce skillet heat to medium. Add 1 tablespoon butter, chopped onion, and minced garlic. Saute for 3-4 minutes until onions soften and garlic becomes fragrant.
  5. Add 1 cup uncooked white rice to skillet. Stir and toast rice for 1-2 minutes until slightly golden.
  6. Pour 1 ¾ cups beef broth into skillet. Bring to boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer rice for 15-18 minutes until tender.
  7. Stir in ½ cup heavy cream and ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese. Mix until cheese melts completely.
  8. Return steak to skillet with accumulated juices. Pour prepared honey BBQ sauce over steak. Simmer 2-3 minutes to blend flavors.
  9. Remove from heat. Garnish with fresh parsley. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Marinate the steak for at least 15 minutes to maximize flavor and tenderness, allowing the seasonings to penetrate the meat deeply.
  • Toast the rice in butter before adding liquid to enhance its nutty flavor and prevent it from becoming mushy during cooking.
  • When searing the steak, avoid overcrowding the skillet to ensure a nice golden-brown crust and prevent steaming the meat.
  • For a lighter version, swap heavy cream with Greek yogurt and use brown rice for added nutrition and a whole grain alternative.
