Description

Crispy Indian Frybread brings Native American culinary traditions right to your kitchen counter with simple ingredients and pure comfort. Warm dough stretched and fried until golden creates a delicious canvas for your favorite toppings, perfect for sharing with friends and family.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cups pinto beans
  • 2 cups flour

Bread Components:

  • 1 cup hot water
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Toppings:

  • 1 tomato
  • 1 lettuce
  • 1 sour cream
  • 3 strips uncooked bacon

Instructions

  1. Combine 2 cups flour, 1 tsp salt, and 3 tsp baking powder in a mixing bowl. Knead the ingredients with your hands until a slightly sticky dough forms. Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Pour 1-2 inches of oil into a large saucepan. Heat the oil to 350°F while the dough rests.
  3. Divide the dough into small golf ball-sized portions. Dust your work surface with flour and roll each ball into a thin, round shape using a pastry roller.
  4. Carefully lower each dough round into the hot oil at 350°F. Fry for 2-3 minutes, turning once, until both sides become golden brown and puffy.
  5. Remove the fried bread with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil. Let them drain for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Brown 1 lb ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes, breaking the meat into small crumbles.
  7. Drain the soaked pinto beans and warm them in a separate pan for 5-6 minutes.
  8. Assemble your fry bread by layering warmed beans, seasoned ground beef, chopped lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and a dollop of sour cream on top of each crispy bread piece.
  9. Sprinkle chopped uncooked bacon strips over the assembled fry bread for an extra layer of flavor and crunch.

Notes

  • Take time to let the dough rest, which helps develop gluten and makes the bread more tender.
  • Ensure the oil is hot enough (around 350°F) before frying to get a crispy, golden exterior without absorbing too much oil.
  • Add a pinch of salt to enhance the bread’s flavor and balance the richness of the fried dough.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute wheat flour with a blend of rice and cornflour, which will give a similar crispy texture.
