Description

Simmering rice and Italian sausage brings pure comfort to your dinner table. Hearty flavors blend together, creating a satisfying meal that hugs your taste buds with warmth.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 cup long-grain white or brown rice

Supporting Ingredients:

  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 12 medium bell peppers

Seasoning and Liquid Ingredients:

  • 1 cup tomato sauce or diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups chicken broth or stock
  • 12 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

Instructions

  1. Pull out your cutting board and slice 1 pound of Italian sausage into bite-sized pieces, creating even chunks for consistent cooking.
  2. Heat 1-2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat (375°F) and brown the sausage pieces for 6-7 minutes until they develop a crispy golden exterior.
  3. Transfer the sausage to a clean plate, leaving the delicious browned bits in the skillet for extra flavor.
  4. Drop your chopped onion, 2 minced garlic cloves, and 1-2 bell peppers into the same skillet, sautéing for 4-5 minutes until the vegetables become soft and aromatic.
  5. Return the seared sausage to the skillet and add 1 cup of long-grain rice, stirring to combine with the vegetables.
  6. Pour 1 cup tomato sauce and 2 cups chicken broth into the skillet, mixing in 1 teaspoon dried basil, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, and optional red pepper flakes.
  7. Reduce heat to low, cover the skillet, and allow the mixture to simmer for exactly 20 minutes until rice absorbs all liquid and becomes tender.
  8. Remove from heat and let the dish rest for 5 minutes, then fluff the rice with a fork and season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Notes

  • Choose spicy or mild Italian sausage depending on your heat preference.
  • Remove sausage casings for easier crumbling and more even distribution through the rice.
  • Rinse rice before cooking to remove excess starch and prevent clumping.
  • For a lighter version, swap pork sausage with turkey or chicken sausage and use low-sodium broth.
