Description

Salisbury steak and potato skillet cooks beef patties and potatoes in rich gravy all in one pan. Hearty, cozy, and low-fuss.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Protein:

  • 1 lb ground beef

Supporting Starches:

  • 2 cups potatoes, diced
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

Seasonings and Liquids:

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ cup onion, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mash 1 lb ground beef with ½ cup breadcrumbs, 1 egg, ¼ cup chopped onion, 1 tsp garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl until ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  2. Shape the meat mixture into four compact oval-shaped patties about ½ inch thick.
  3. Warm 2 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat for 2 minutes until the oil shimmers slightly.
  4. Carefully place patties into the hot skillet and cook for 6 minutes, developing a deep golden-brown crust on the first side.
  5. Flip patties and continue cooking for another 5-6 minutes until internal temperature reaches 160°F.
  6. Transfer browned patties to a clean plate, keeping them warm.
  7. Add 2 cups diced potatoes to the same skillet, spreading them in a single layer over the remaining meat drippings.
  8. Cook potatoes for 12-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden and can be easily pierced with a fork.
  9. Pour 1 cup beef broth and 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce over the potatoes, scraping any browned bits from the pan’s bottom.
  10. Nestle the cooked patties back into the skillet, allowing them to simmer in the sauce for 4-5 minutes.
  11. Serve the patties and potatoes immediately, spooning extra sauce over the top.

Notes

  • Always use fresh ground beef with a bit of fat content to keep the patties juicy and flavorful.
  • Avoid overworking the meat mixture when forming patties, which can make them tough and dense.
  • For gluten-free adaptation, replace breadcrumbs with crushed gluten-free crackers or almond flour.
  • Cut potatoes into uniform sizes to ensure even cooking and prevent some pieces from becoming mushy while others remain undercooked.
