Description

Salisbury steak dinner brings comfort straight to your dinner table with a classic American favorite that feels like a warm hug from grandma. Hearty ground beef patties smothered in rich mushroom gravy make this nostalgic meal perfect for satisfying serious hunger on chilly evenings.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 4 medium potatoes
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms

Steak Patty Binders:

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion

Seasonings and Cooking Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup milk (for mashed potatoes)
  • 4 tablespoons butter (for mashed potatoes)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (for mashed potatoes)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix 1 pound ground beef with ½ cup breadcrumbs, ¼ cup chopped onion, ¼ cup milk, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper in a large bowl until just combined.
  2. Form the meat mixture into four oval steaks, each about ½ inch thick.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a skillet at medium heat (375°F). Cook steaks for 4-5 minutes per side until they reach 160°F internal temperature.
  4. Remove steaks from skillet and keep warm, preserving the drippings.
  5. Add 1 cup mushrooms and ¼ cup onion to the same skillet. Saute for 5 minutes until softened.
  6. Dust vegetables with 2 tablespoons flour and stir constantly for 1 minute to prevent burning.
  7. Slowly pour 2 cups beef broth into the skillet, whisking to prevent lumps from forming.
  8. Stir in 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon soy sauce. Simmer gravy for 6-7 minutes until it thickens.
  9. Peel and cut 4 potatoes into 1-inch chunks. Place in a pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt.
  10. Bring potato water to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Cook for 15-20 minutes until potatoes are fork-tender.
  11. Drain potatoes and return to pot. Add ½ cup milk and 4 tablespoons butter. Mash until smooth.
  12. Season mashed potatoes with salt and pepper to taste.
  13. Return steaks to gravy, spooning sauce over each piece and warming for 2-3 minutes.

Notes

  • Mixing the meat gently helps keep the Salisbury steaks tender and prevents them from becoming tough or dense.
  • Using fresh mushrooms creates a more flavorful gravy, but pre-sliced work well for quick weeknight cooking.
  • Letting the steaks rest in the gravy for a few minutes helps them absorb extra flavor and stay moist.
  • For a gluten-free version, swap breadcrumbs for almond flour and use cornstarch instead of flour when thickening the gravy.
