Description

Sautéed Mushrooms and Onions dance beautifully in a hot skillet, releasing their rich, golden flavors that complement any main dish perfectly. Grab some fresh mushrooms, slice them with care, and watch how quickly these caramelized gems elevate your meal from ordinary to extraordinary.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces mushrooms
  • 1 large yellow onion

Supporting Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic

Seasoning and Herbs:

  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Optional Additions:

  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Instructions

  1. Heat a 12-inch skillet to medium-high temperature at 375°F. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil, allowing them to sizzle and blend together.
  2. Add 1 large sliced yellow onion to the hot pan. Stir thoroughly to coat the onion in the fat mixture. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onion starts softening.
  3. Add 8 oz of sliced mushrooms to the skillet. Spread them in a single layer without overcrowding. Let the mushrooms sit undisturbed for 3-4 minutes to develop a golden-brown crust.
  4. Stir the mushrooms and onions together. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, 2 minced garlic cloves, and 2 teaspoons of fresh thyme into the pan. Mix everything thoroughly.
  5. Continue cooking for 5-6 minutes at medium-high heat. Watch for the mushrooms to release moisture and the onions to become deeply caramelized. If the pan looks dry, add a tablespoon of water.
  6. For extra depth, splash 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar into the skillet. Stir quickly to distribute the tangy liquid across the vegetables.
  7. Remove the pan from heat. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Transfer the sautéed mixture to a serving dish immediately while steaming hot.

Notes

  • Choose cremini or shiitake mushrooms for deeper, richer flavor that stands out more than white button varieties.
  • Never crowd the pan when sautéing mushrooms, or they’ll steam instead of developing that beautiful golden-brown caramelization.
  • Salt the mushrooms toward the end of cooking to help them release moisture and prevent them from becoming rubbery.
  • For a vegan version, replace butter with extra olive oil and skip any animal-based additions to keep the dish plant-based friendly.
