Vegetables:
- 1 large head broccoli
- 2 cloves garlic
- ½ inch ginger
Sauce and Seasonings:
- 5 tablespoons soy sauce
- ½ cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- Cooked rice
- Sesame seeds
- Green onions
Instructions
- Mix sliced flank steak with 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, ½ teaspoon ground ginger, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Let your meat marinate at room temperature for 20 minutes.
- Boil water in a pot and blanch broccoli florets for 2-3 minutes until bright green. Quickly drain and rinse with cold water to halt cooking.
- Whisk together ½ cup beef broth, 3 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, and ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes in a small bowl. Ensure cornstarch dissolves completely.
- Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a wok at high heat (400°F). Spread marinated beef in a single layer and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned. Remove beef from wok.
- Add remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil to wok. Sauté minced garlic and ginger for 30 seconds. Toss in blanched broccoli and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes.
- Pour sauce into wok and simmer for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly until thickened. Return beef to wok and coat thoroughly.
- Serve hot over steamed rice. Sprinkle sesame seeds and green onions on top for extra flavor and presentation.
Notes
- Marinate beef for at least 30 minutes to ensure deep flavor penetration and tender meat.
- Blanch broccoli quickly to maintain its bright green color and crisp texture without overcooking.
- Use a very hot wok or skillet to get a perfect sear on the beef, creating delicious caramelized edges.
- For a gluten-free version, swap soy sauce with tamari and use cornstarch as a thickener instead of traditional flour-based methods.
